this project was so unique for me that I decided it deserved its own page, so that it could be explained properly.
this was a complete remodeling of a guest bath. the small bathroom, already possessing a cave-like atmosphere due to its size and layout, was redesigned to resemble an underwater cave, as might be found in the reefs off hawaii, where the homeowners - who are avid scuba divers - have their vacation home.
the rocky surfaces are built up of sheets of dow insulation foam and coated in expanding urethane foam which was then carved to mimic broken lava surfaces. the whole surface was then coated with a marine-grade epoxy to add strength and seal the surface from moisture.
the murals were begun in studio during construction and then marouflaged to the walls when completed. details were added on site to blend the murals into the surrounding rock walls. all the fish in the murals were specifically chosen by the homeowner.
the floor was resurfaced with coral sand epoxied to a new subfloor.

I have coined the term ‘conceptual environment’ for this type of project. while it has so far been a one-of-a-kind project, I believe there are several ways the theatrical techniques and disciplines used here could be adapted toward creating highly unique thematic indoor environments for those willing and able to think outside the box. from rooms that reflect a specific hobby or passion, like this one, to children’s play rooms that offer 3-dimensional murals that offer spaces to climb on, play in, or hide under, the possibilites are endless.
